Larger lots and newer homes north of Lancaster
The Village of Carroll was founded in 1829 where the Ohio and Erie Canal met the Lancaster Lateral Canal, and today is a village of about 500 people on US-33 between Lancaster and Columbus. The surrounding Greenfield Township, which also takes in part of Lancaster (Wikipedia), pairs rolling farmland with the US-33 business corridor. New homes keep going up on acreage in the Bloom-Carroll school district, such as a 2026 ranch on just over 2 acres.
What that means for garage electrical:
- Newer attached garages that need an EV-ready circuit, a workshop or heat added after move-in
- Detached garages, shops and pole barns set far from the house, where wire size and trenching drive the cost
- Older village homes with the same aging-wiring issues as older Lancaster neighborhoods
Home EV charging for US-33 commuters
A daily round trip to Columbus is well within a single overnight Level 2 charge for most EVs. In newer homes with 200-amp service, a charger in the attached garage is often a straightforward job. In older homes or detached garages, start with a load check. See EV charger installation.

Detached shops and long wire runs
On larger lots, the shop or garage may be 100 feet or more from the house. Over about 75 feet, voltage drop starts to matter and wire may need to be upsized, which raises material cost. For a building that far away, compare two options:
- A feeder from the house panel to a subpanel in the shop; see detached garage electrical
- A separate electric service with its own meter at the shop, arranged with your utility; see the rural townships page
Permits and inspection outside Lancaster city limits
Carroll and the unincorporated parts of Greenfield Township are outside the City of Lancaster's building department. [Verify before publishing: which office issues residential electrical permits and inspections for the Village of Carroll and for unincorporated Greenfield Township.] For new electric service, South Central Power requires the meter base to be inspected by "the county electrical inspector or other governing authority" before it connects. Your electrician will confirm what applies to your address.
AEP Ohio or South Central Power?
Depending on the address, homes around Carroll may be served by AEP Ohio or by South Central Power, the member-owned cooperative headquartered in Lancaster. Check your electric bill. It matters for service upgrades, new meters and who to call to disconnect power while an electrician works on your service.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Ohio electrical contractor licenses are statewide, though some jurisdictions also require local registration; permits come from whichever office covers your address.
It depends on distance, how much power the shop needs, and your utility's charges for a new service. For a shop close to the house with modest needs, a feeder is usually simpler; for a large, distant shop, a separate service can make sense.
Often, yes, after a load calculation. Many newer homes have room for both, especially with gas heat.
